Exercise is the fundamental need for a person to maintain a healthy body. It is also one of the many factors why people grow especially for the young adults. As more and more people realize its importance, they begin to exercise as one of their daily routines. Consequently, the recreational sports centers in each community become crowded, and the demand of more space to exercise increased. In the University of Texas at Austin, the same principle holds true. There are approximately 52,000 students in UT each year, excluding the staffs and faculty members. Many of them exercise everyday. Among these people, some of them go to other places for exercise such as the ones provided by the local apartment complex, others, as the number indicated, stay on the school gymnasiums for their nonacademic activities. Statistics show that there are approximately 9,000 people using the Gregory Gym (Gregory) and the Recreational Sports Center (Rec) everyday. The spaces are usually overcrowded during the peak time from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm to 12:00 am. Especially in the weight room and the basketball courts, many people have to stand by on the sideline and wait for a long time for their chance to exercise. In order to solve these problems, the Division of Recreational Sports (DRS) should maximize the usage of the Gregory Gym and the Recreational Sports Center because more than 90% of the students have experienced the crowdedness in the gym and feel they would be discouraged from exercising if the gym is overcrowded.
