Course Reviews

5.12 Organic Chemistry I, Spring 2003 Books
Prerequisites: General Chemistry background

Level: Undergraduate

This subject deals primarily with understanding the structure and reactivity of organic molecules. Emphasis is on substitution and elimination reactions and chemistry of the carbonyl group.

5.13 Organic Chemistry II, Spring 2003 Books
Prerequisites: Organic Chemistry I

Level: Undergraduate

Synthesis, structure determination, mechanism, and the relationships between structure and reactivity. Special topics included to illustrate the role of organic chemistry in biological systems, medicine, and in the chemical industry.

5.32 Intermediate Chemical Experimentation, Spring 2003 Books
Prerequisites: Organic Chem I and II

Level: Undergraduate

More advanced experimental work than 5.310 or 5.311. Organic synthesis assisted by chiral catalysis, purification, and analysis of organic compounds employing IR, 1D and 2D NMR, UV spectroscopies and mass spectrometry, and thin layer and non-chiral and chiral gas chromatography.
