Intel Innovation in Education

The Intel Innovation in Education initiative is a global, multi-million dollar effort to help realise the possibilities of science and technology in education. Its goal is to prepare today's teachers and students for tomorrow's demands. Intel develops and supports education programs that help meet the needs of students and communities worldwide through:

· improving science, mathematics, engineering and technology education;
· improving education through the effective use of technology in classrooms; and
· broadening access to technology and technical careers.

Intel is committed to work with the Ministry of Education Malaysia and schools in implementing the Intel Teach to the Future program on a nationwide basis, so as to help complement and accelerate information technology awareness initiatives by the Malaysian Government.

Intel Teach to the Future Program

The Intel Teach to the Future program is a worldwide initiative designed to address the barriers teachers face in effectively applying computer technology to enhance students' learning. Its goal is to train classroom teachers how to promote inquiry-based learning and effectively integrate the use of computers into their existing curriculum so that students will increase their learning and achievement. Over the next three years, the program will be implemented in 20 countries around the world, reaching more than 400,000 teachers and millions of students.
The program provides a flexible, modular curriculum delivered by teachers for teachers. The curriculum is based on MS Office 2000 Professional as a teaching and learning tool. The training incorporates the use of the Internet, web page design and multimedia software.
Key elements of the program include hands-on, face-to-face learning; a focus on process over content to accommodate a wide range of subjects and school levels; and ongoing evaluation.

The objectives of the Intel Teach to the Future program include:
· Promoting the effective use of technology in classrooms.
· Focusing on the ways students and teachers can use technology to enhance learning through research, communication, and productivity strategies and tools.
· Emphasising on hands-on learning and the creation of lesson plans and evaluation tools.
· Promoting engaging opportunities for students through access to technology.
· Encouraging teachers to work in teams, problem-solve, and participate in peer review of their lesson plans.

Training Program

The training program for Intel Teach to the Future was prepared by the Institute of Computer Technology (ICT), Sunnyvale, California, U.S.A. In Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia (School of Educational Studies and Centre for Instructional Technology and Multimedia) has been appointed to localise and adapt the contents to suit the needs of the Malaysian educational system, teachers and students. In addition, i-EduWeb.com Centre Sdn Bhd has been appointed the Project Management and Training Agency to help ensure the successful implementation of the program for primary and secondary schools' teachers in Malaysia.

The training program consists of ten 4-hour modules, which require a total of 40 hours of in-class training and 20 hours of take-home activities.
