Nutrition Guidelines for Collies
The following will help you to choose the best food for your pet.
Ethoxyquin- preservative. Cousin to rubber that can cause serious health problems.
BHA- preservative.
BHT- preservative.
Try to choose a dog food that is preserved naturally with mixed tocopherols (Vitamin E) and citric acid (Vitamin C). Also, look to make sure that the meat source in the food is either the first or second ingredient listed on the bag.
Tallow- Some foods use this in place of animal fat.
Unlike animal fat, tallow melts at a very high temperature. In order for it to melt, your pet would have to run very hard. And, if you have a pet who doesn't exercise a lot it will build up inside of them and can cause them to become overweight. This is especially unhealthy for older pets. So, when looking for a food, choose one that contains animal fat instead of tallow.
By-Products- Some foods only use human grade ingredients in their by-products, but there are some foods that use anything including beaks and feathers and other ingredients that are very hard on your pet's digestive system.
