Wizard's First Rule

James gave a wicked little smile. "The Mord-Sith," he whispered. "You are going to die..."

"What's a Mord-Sith?" -Richard

"Desperately, he tried to get a grip on the magic, tried to put away the pain as he had learned to do before. It did not respond to his will. With rising panic, he realized he no longer had control of it. She did."

"Mistress Denna, if there is a Mord-Sith who could raise a scream from a dead man, it would be you." - Richard

Denna pressed the Agiel against his side. The shock of the pain made him cry out, even though he had no intention of giving her the satisfaction of seeing how much it hurt. Every muscle in his body locked rigid with the agony of the thing against his side. His mind was filled with the want of having it off him. Denna pushed the slightest bit harder, making him scream louder. He heard a pop, and felt a rib crack..."Now, my pet, say 'Thank you, Mistress Denna, for teaching me.' " Her face came closer. "Say it."

"The year they chose you, Mistress Constance, must have been a year of desperate need; otherwise, one of such limited intelligence would never have been selected to be Mord-Sith. Only the most ignorant would put their own petty ambitions above the value of a friend. Especially a friend who has sacrificed much for you. You are not worthy to kiss Mistress Denna's Agiel." - Richard

"You will remember me?"
"I will have nightmares the rest of my life."

Her smile widened. "I'm glad." She seemed genuinely proud. -Denna to Richard

Richard clenched his teeth, but nothing could have prepared him for it. His head felt as if it had been turned to glass and shattered into a thousand pieces. His fingernails cut into his palms. All sense of time shattered apart with everything else. he was in a wasteland of agony with no beginning, no end. Every nerve in his body seared with razor-sharp, burning misery. He had no idea how long she held the Agiel there, but when she took it away, his screams echoed from the stone walls.

The frown and the smile returned. "Why would you be so foolish as to do what you did? Surely, you must know I will hurt you for doing it."

He looked at her puzzlement a moment. "Mistress Denna, what difference does it make? You are going to hurt me anyway. I can't imagine what more you could do to me."

Her lip curled in a sneer. "Oh, my love, you have a very limited imagination."

He felt her grab the tongue of his belt and yank the buckle open.

She gritted her teeth. "It is time we found some new places on you to hurt. It is time to see what you are really made of."

"Mord-Sith -- giggling!" -Cara

"If you get yourself killed trying to rule the world, I will personally break every bone in your body." -Cara

Temple of the Winds

"Hurry up and torture me before I fall asleep and miss it." -Cara

Where are these from?

Cara: "Will there be people at this home place who need killing?"

Richard: "I don't think so."

Cara: "Then why do we want to go there?"

"Would you tell this obstinate husband of yours to let me kill someone before I go crazy?" -Cara

"A Mord-Sith goes nowhere without her red outfit." -Hally

"Mord-Sith do not die in bed, old and toothless." -Hally

Berdine leaned against the desk beside Cara and folded her arms. "A love letter to your bride?"

Richard pulled open a drawer. "Something like that."

Berdine put on a coy smile. "Maybe we can help. We will tell you the proper things to say to keep her heart pounding and forget you need a bath."
Raina joined her sisters of the Agiel against the desk, adding an impish laugh that sparkled in her dark eyes. "We will give you lessons in being a proper mate. You and your queen will be happy to have us around for advice."

"And you had better listen to us, " Berdine cautioned, "or we will teach her how to make you dance to her tune."

"Why don't you go get some sleep, "Richard said absently as he searched for a pen and ink, "You were riding hard, too, trying to catch me, and couldn't have gotten much more sleep than I did."

Cara turned her nose up in mock indignation. "We will stand watch while you sleep. Women are stronger than men. "

Richard looked up when he heard the door squeak open. "Berdine, where do you think you're going?"

"To find a bed of my own. We will take turns standing watch over you." She put a hand on a hip, and with the other spun the Agiel on the chain at her wrist. "Control yourself, Lord Rahl. You will have a new bride in your bed soon enough. You can wait until then."

Berdine winked. "Lord Rahl, I know you like me the best, but stop thinking about my behind as I walk, and write your letter."
