The Meadow

Picking the place was easy, as she had been here many times on her own. She loved the place, how the meadow sloped down the hill to reveal a view that stretched for miles. How could anyone not love this place, it had scenery that was breath taking and the tranquillity that is possessed could not be matched anywhere.

Sitting looking at the view that lay ahead of her, listening to the breeze rustle through the trees that were behind her. The wood had always been there at the back of the meadow but she had never ventured into them, it always looked uninviting and she did not like the dark that seemed to be inside of it.

Whenever she needed to get away from things and just sit and collect her thoughts she would come here. It had helped her many times and also recently with the troubles she was having. She had decided to have a picnic with her this day and stay there for a while, as she did not need to be working. She had taken the rest of the week off. The need to distance herself from things was overwhelming and she new she could find peace here.

She had been sitting here for a few hours, jut looking at the view and thinking of nothing just absorbed in the peace. Deciding that she was now hungry she decided to unpack her hamper, she had decided to spoil herself and have a really nice treat. The food was cooked and packed the wine was chilled and even the fruit looked divine. She noticed that the basket was packed for two, yet she had not intended it to be, shaking her head and laughing to herself for being so silly for not realising what she had done.

Leaning forward she picked up the glass of wine that she had poured, and then sat back and sipped it while still looking at the view. When all of a sudden she heard a noise behind her, it was a cough, which seemed to startle her. Looking round she saw a man coming towards her; he was dressed for a days ramble with walking gear and a knapsack on his back.

As he came closer she had a good look at him; he was tall and quite handsome. He had broad shoulders and looked quite fit.  His hair was dark and short; the style seemed to suit him. He spoke to her and apologised if he had startled her, he had not intended to come this way but he had ventured into the woods and then lost the path he was on. He looked down at her sitting on the blanket, and smiled.
You look ready for a picnic, he said, Nodding, she said, she liked to come here and get away from the hustle of the city.

He asked if she was here with someone, she looked at him, and asked why he thought that. Well as there were two plates in the basket and two glasses. He assumed that, she was with someone. Smiling she shook her head and said that it was habit fixing the basket for two? And it was a habit that she would have to learn to break.

He said the he would bid her farewell and not intrude on her privacy any longer.Biding her good day he began to walk off. She looked at him as he began to walk off down the slope, and then looked at the food and had the idea to ask him to stay, as there was plenty for two and it was dinner time.

It was something off an impulse and something she had never even thought she would ever do. But she called after him, feeling a little foolish especially if he refused. Excuse me but have you eaten? I have plenty of food as you can see and your welcome to share it with me. Looking back at her, he smiled and said that he did not wish to intrude into her picnic. Oh it is all right I do not mind, she said.
Well then in that case I am a little hungry and it would be nice to eat with some pleasant company.

Taking off his backpack and removing his jacket he sat near to her, she passed him a glass and asked if he would like some wine. My we do push the boat out when having a picnic he said. Smiling she told him that it was a treat that she had decided to give herself. But I had not realised that I had packed so much into the basket. I think it was because my mind was distracted with coming here, and knowing how relaxed this place made me.He took a sip of the wine and said that it was a good choice, especially for the day being warm and it also was chilled just right. He thanked her. They sipped their wine and talked of the scenery and the history of the place. They even ate the food, it seemed to taste even better in his company, and he seemed nice and spoke with an air of confidence but yet with a soft edge to it that seemed to put you at ease.  He talked of how he loved to come and walk around an about here and that even as a child he had loved it here. He turned and looked at her and said that he had a little confession to tell her. This startled her somewhat but she told him to proceed with what he had to say.

He told her that as she knew he liked to walk here whenever he could, but what he told her now seemed to startle her for a minute. He said that on many occasions he had passed this meadow, and seen her sitting here all alone. There had been many a time he had wanted to come close and talk with her but he did not want to intrude.

She asked him what had made today so different that he had decided to come on over. He shrugged and said; perhaps it was the sunlight on her hair, or the warm breeze that had made him come over.
He had said that he wanted to come and have a close look at her face and just to perhaps once hear her voice. He said that curiosity had gotten the better of him, normally he never liked to intrude on someones privacy. She felt flattered and even thought it nice that someone would want to get to know her this way. Looking into his eyes and seeing him for the first time close, she liked what she saw, and even on some level of consciousness there was an attraction. A fleeting thought came into her mind, would it not be nice to be swept up in his arms and for him to hold her and even make love to her. She blushed a little at the thought, and he was looking at her, he asked if something was wrong.

Shaking her head she made an excuse that it was the wine that had caused her to be a little flushed. And looking at him she had to turn her head a little away, as it was as though he could read her thoughts and knew what she had been thinking. She began to clear away the empty plates and scrapes the food into a plastic bag, anything to stop the feeling of awkwardness that seemed to have arisen since the thought she had.
She needed to distance herself from it, and not let him see that it had also excited her as well.
