Why call two female rats "Adam & Steve"?
The names Adam and Steve come from the anti-gay slogan used by the religious right in America, "God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve".  I am gay (not too fond of the word 'lesbian'), and like to reflect this in my life - including my pets.  I was brainstorming for names for the two rats I was about to get, knowing I wanted names which had some sort of relevance to gay things or people, which were witty and funny, and be short and usable.  The 'Adam and Steve' thing came to mind, and immediate won the debate.  It just so happened that the two rats I got were female - after ringing up 4 other pet stores who didn't have rats, I finally located two female rats at Jansens.  Having just come up with these two great names, I wasn't going to let the gender bother me - and thus Adam and Steve, my two beautiful original rat girls, came into my life.  Of course, one mustn't let the irony of my first two rats being "Adam & Steve" escape - they were the start of my great rat progeny, from them all the other rats descend (though by adoption, my rat ladies don't go for artificial insemination ;-)
"My lesbianism is an act of christian charity.  All those women out there praying for a man, and I'm giving them my share."
