Last Words
By Misti Sandefur

Tears dampened Jenny's cheeks as she walked into the now quite country home. She swiped at her eyes, thankful she hadn't worn mascara. Tears rolled quicker as she thought of Joe telling her she was beautiful without all the makeup.

Her feet ached, so she kicked off her shoes before she flopped into the worn, but comfortable recliner. Looking around their small house, another wave of grief washed over her. Without Joe the house seemed so empty and lonely.

Grabbing a tissue, Jenny wiped away her tears. She didn't know what she was going to do without him.

Reaching into her pocket and pulling out the letter Joe wrote to her, she remember what he said when he gave it to her:

"The day after my funeral is the day I'd like for you to read this letter. My hope is that you will find some comfort in this letter."

Her hands trembled as she unfolded the letter, still unsure if she was ready to read his last words.

Swallowing the lump in her throat, she begin reading the note:

"My Darling Jenny,

First, I'd like to thank you for all your love and care during my illness. You always made me comfortable, and you always tended to my every need. Without you I couldn't have gotten through it all.

I was looking forward to growing old with you, and building a family together. However, that time was cut short, and I wish that I could turn back the clock, but I can't. I know right now you're wondering if you can make it without me. You can. In time, when the mourning subsides, you'll find the strength in you that I've always seen. And someday, you'll find someone who can give you the family you've always wanted. When the time comes, know that you have my blessing.

Thank you for bringing me joy and happiness. I loved every minute of our three years together. I'm going to a much better place now, a place where I will no longer be in pain, a place of peace and happiness. Every time you look toward Heaven know that I'm looking down upon you.

Jenny, I will meet you at the gates of Heaven when you're time comes, and we'll
be together again. I love you.
All My Love,
Joe"

Slowly, she folded the letter while tears poured down her face like rain. Holding the letter close to her heart, she looked up toward Heaven and said, "Joe, I don't know if I'll ever love another again, but no matter what the future brings my way I will always hold you in my heart.

There's something you don't know about me, Joe. I kept from telling you because I didn't want you to have to deal with it along with your illness." Taking a deep breath she tried to collect herself before continuing on.

"I felt so guilty for not telling you, and I think telling you now will release my guilt, or at least make me feel better.

Not long after you were diagnosed with cancer I found out that I was about four weeks pregnant. It's going to be hard now without you here to share the joy of our first child." Wiping the tears from her eyes, she paused for a moment.

I will make it with the support of the family, and when our baby comes into this world he or she will carry your name. If it's a boy I will name him Joseph JR., and if it's a girl, I will name her......" She had to think a moment. "Josephine. Yes, that will work, Josephine is a beautiful name.

One last thing, babe, I will make sure that baby Lawson knows what a great man you were, and what a loving Father you would have been.Until we meet again - I love you, Joseph Allen Lawson."
