| (7) Jeremiah Buzbee born 1813 S.C. Of the four sons of Jacob and Jane Buzbee, most is known about Jeremiah M. Buzbee, their youngest. Jeremiah managed to find himself in two American Wars and sevured the highest ranck of any of the Buzbees recorded in the 19th century (though not the 18th or 20th). He also outlived two of his three wives and was the father of 22 children---a fact that he describes as follows: "(IF) you want to know how many children I have in all, living and dead. I have not many---only 22 in round numbers. He was born in 1813 in Abbyville District S.C. and 20 years later on December 22 1833 he married Allie Ellison in St. Clair County. Their first son H. Hall arrived a year later in 1834 and their second son Joshua a year later in 1835. The next year Jeremiah enlisted in Captain Patrick's company, of the Alabama Volunteers for the Creek Indian War. He was enroled and mustered in June 19, 1836, 18 miles below Ft. Mitchell. He was discharged the next month on July 31st at Montgomery Alabama having been a private. His family, which at the time of the Creek Indian War included the sons Hudson Hall and Joshua grew; Mary,1837; John,1838; Sarah,1840; Josephine,1842; Martha,1846; and another girl,1849. From 1836 to 1842 he lived in St. Clair County, Alabama; from 1842 until 1844 at Talladega Alabama and from 1844 on at Hissop in Cossa County Alabama. His first wife died in November of 1852. One of the records which were later to be filed in government search for his Indian War pension showed that Allie Ellison Buzbee died in Calhoun County Arkansas. This is the area to which his brother Joshua and Susan (Moore) Buzbee had taken their children only two years before. Joshua, Susan and their then-six children had sold their property in Alabama, packed up, and moved to Calhoun and Dallas counties in Arkansas. Jeremiah married again however in 1854. His second wife was Martha Ann Scott who died 30 years later. A dim record in Jeremiah's handwriting indicates that Martha Ann and his children include; S.W.H. Buzbee born August 7, 1856; T.J. Buzbee and Ellie P. Buzbee born December 6, 1859; J.C. Buzbee born January 11, 1861; W.M. and J.M. Buzbee born Auguast 10, 1863; W.S. Buzbee born September 2, 1867. Jeremiah resigned, October 24, 1862 and was succeeded by F.M. Allison (a relative of his then-deceased first wife, Allie Ellison/Allison???). Jeremiah's name continues to appear on a roster of the regiment as late as November 12, 1864 however. Martha Ann died in May of 1884. A year later on July 12, 1885 Jeremiah married a widow. Susan Lavinie (May) Turner at Hissop. They had a daughter, Elsie V. born October 29, 1886--when Jeremiah was 73 years old!! By trade Jeremiah was a farrier and blacksmith with blue eyes, dark hair, and a height of 5'8". He died May 3, 1902 at Hissop in Coosa County, having been a recipient for more than nine years of his $8 a month pension for his Indian War services. Susan Lavinie lived on for 31 more years and died at the age of 79 at Alpine Ark. on November 30, 1933. She was receiving at her death $27 a month widow's pension for Jeremiah's Indian War service of nearly a century before. Jeremiah's oldest brother, Jacob Jr. had married Luvena Allman March 14 , 1831. Their children recorded through the 1850 census and their birth dates were: Ellender,1832; William,1834; Thomas, 1836; Charlotte,1838; Isam,1840; John,1842; Elizabeth,1843; James,1845; Emeline,1846; Carter,1848; and Joshua,1849. Both Jeremiah and Jacob Jr. lived in Coosa County. Among the miscellaneous data found relating to these two brothers is the record in St. Clair County (Book A, P.55) of Jacob Buzbee giving to his sons Jacob and Jeremiah personal property, December 10, 1824. William is presumed to have been their older brother, at the only marriage record of the time in St. Clair County shows the marriage July 11, 1821 of William Buzbee to Elizabeth Rey. This would have occurred about a year after Jacob and the family moved to St. Clair County. |
