You know that you are working with a decimal because you see a little point called the decimal point. It looks like this. . Whenever you see a decimal point, you know that the number is broken into places. The numbers to the left of the decimal point are whole numbers. The numbers to the right of the decimal point are tenths, hundredths, thousandths, ten thousandths, hundred thousandths, and so on. They go on forever.
