HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
The origins of Chi Square can be traced back to the fall of 1999, when two then college sophomores were visted by the spirit of Jean Baptiste Pierre Antoine de Monet, Chevalier de Lemarck while in their humble dormitory.  The spirit of the oft-maligned 18th century scientist commanded the two up and coming biology students to form a social group for those "unique" individuals who found themselves surfing the internet on Friday evenings  (not to say that they could not have gone out; it just so happened that there were far too many beautiful women pursuing each of these young men that they felt unsafe leaving their respective rooms after dark).  The spirit continued, ordering that the organization should honor the memories of those scientists who are often scoffed at today due to their "antiquated" theories on the workings of the natural world.  It is to the memory of such great minds and their unique approaches that Chi Square is dedicated.

The two dashingly handsome (yet conveniently single)  founders of Chi Square fraternity, immediately following their vision of the spirit of Lamarck that fateful night in Rochester.  The shock from their encounter with the beyond is readily apparent.
  WHY CHI SQUARE?
Many have wondered why we chose the name Chi Square.  The answer is two fold -- not only does it contain a letter of the Greek alphabet (and believe it or not, we got some people to think that the image of an equilateral quadrangle was actally a Greek letter -- the letter "square") which makes for a somewhat passable fraternity name, but it is also a statistical test useful in many applications (in our case, to test the distribution of phenotypes against predicted Mendelian ratios).  So there you have it.  Soon, banners begging college greenhorns to join Chi Square appeared on our halls. Our window had large construction paper letters proclaiming "Rush Chi Square."  Strangely enough, we had no takers, although we came very close on a couple of instances.  Okay, just one.  And not really that close either.  Oh well.
The "real" Chi square statistical test, for which our social organization is lovingly named.  The founding members of Chi Square thought the name of  this test, first encountered in a riveting genetics lecture, would be perfect for their organization.  To learn more about the test, simply click on the graphic.  Image from the website "Chi-Square Calculator."
  CHI SQUARE TODAY
Today, Chi Square members are active in the University of Rochester community.  They regularly attend abjectly dull classes, consume delectable meals at university dining services, and purchase grossly overpriced texts and other items from the campus bookstore.  Clearly, Chi Square brings lots of excitement to the University of Rochester (and money to the trustees' coffers).  We also are proud to announce the beginnings of  second and third chapters at Michigan State and SUNY Potsdam, respectively.  But Chi Square isn't all about making campus a better place . . . we still know how to have fun!  This is unequivocally demonstrated by the picture to the right, showing a typical night at the Chi Square . . . room.
Whether this photograph depicts a bizarre hazing ritual or not, it still shows that Chi Square members love to have fun!
