Valdez Math Program
Matemáticas Para Todos
Basic Philosophy
- All students can learn math.
- teachers have to believe all
students can learn math.
- Sound teaching will work with
all students.
- Minority students do not need
"watered down math" in order to be successful in
high level math.
- Parents must be totally
involved with their children's education.
- All students should enter
high school with the skills to be successful in Algebra 1 or its
equivelent.
- This project is "teacher
initiated" and teachers make all the imortant educational decisions.
- This is a common effort by
Elementary, Middle School, High School and University teachers to solve
an educational problem.
- We believe that math is a
vehicle to teach students how to think; if successful in math,
anything is possible.
- Truly heterogeneous classes
will be achieved when all students are able to take caclulus before
graduation.
José A. Valdés
José Antonio Valdés was born in Cuba
in 1928. He taught mathematics both there and at Andrew
Hill High School
in San José, California.
In 1989 he was named CABE Teacher of the Year, in 1990 he received the Hispanic
Engineer National Achievement Education Award, and in 1991 was recognized on
Chanel 11's Portrates of Success. His is best known for establishing the Valdes
Summer Math Institute (in San Jose)
which has been successful in changing the placemetn and achievement of minority
students in math. All who knew him have their own personal memories of an
outstanding man. He passed away in 1991, but his dream and those he inspired
will continue to advance and find success.
Origin of José Valdés Summer
Math Institute
San Jose, CA
José taught students on the premise that all students can learn mathematic,
and he was right. Disturbed by the high number of minority student in basic
math, and by the fact that very few of those student ever enrolled in college
preparatory mathematics, he searched for a solution. To remedy the situation he
knew that students in middle schoo must be prepared for college preparatory
math courses taught in high school. He created a Summer Math Institute that
would beet middle school students at theri current math level and advance them
a full year in seven weeks if intensive study. The Summer Math Institute always
has mor applicants than can be accommodated and that has been duplicated in
other communities.
