Algebra II - Syllabus

CLASS RULES

1.     I am responsible for my own learning.  This means I will be prepared for every class.  I will follow directions and stay on my assigned task.  I will raise my hand to ask questions whenever there is something that I do not understand.

2.     I respect my classmates’ right to learn.  I will not disrupt the class by talking without permission, making unnecessary noises, swearing, or causing any other unnecessary interruptions.  I am aware that bringing water or soda to class are privileges that may be lost if they cause a disruption or if I fail to clean up.

3.     I respect my classmates and their possessions.  I will not do anything to make my classmates feel insecure or uncomfortable.  I will not tamper with anyone else’s property.

Expectations

1.   Maintain a high academic standard throughout the year.

2.   Be prepared for class:  Questions, textbook, homework, and supplies.

3.   Be in your seat and ready to work when the bell rings.

4.   When I am talking no one else should be talking.  If another student is presenting information, no one else should be talking.

5.   Put trash where it belongs: in the trash can.  We have recycling bins in class for recyclable materials.

6.   Plan to use the restroom during lunch, brunch, and passing periods.  There will be no bathroom passes.

  1. You are expected to know and observe all school rules of conduct, attendance, and dress.  Please note:  THE DRESS CODE WILL BE FOLLOWED.
CLASS POLICIES

Grading Policy
Grades will be based on individual performance.  Grades will be calculated approximately as follows:
50% tests, 10% quizzes, 15% homework, 10% Homework Quizzes, 5% Projects / Writing (Essays) / Other, 10% Notebook.  Grades will be based on the percentage of possible points that you earn.
A         90% or above                          B          80% to 89%                             C         70% to 79%
D         60% to 69%                             F          Below 60

Homework – 15% of grade: Homework is essential for success in this class and will be assigned daily. Only with practice will students fully grasp the material covered. You will complete each homework assignment by the start of the next class period.  Homework will be checked at the beginning of each period.  Homework will be reviewed near the start of each class period.
10 points – if complete and all necessary work is shown
5 points – if incomplete, but more than 50% done, work shown
0 points – if less than 50% complete or no work shown

All homework will be written on notebook binder paper (loose-leaf).  Each assignment page or practice sheet will be done on its own piece of binder paper.  When homework is checked off it is to be placed in a 3-Ring binder and kept for the semester.

Homework Quiz – 10% of grade:  We will be having homework quizzes each chapter.  You will be using your homework assignments on these quizzes so it is vital that you keep your homework organized and complete.

Tests
– 50% of grade:  Tests are given at the end of each unit and a cumulative exam is given at the end of each semester.  Students will be notified of the test date in advance, and are expected to be in attendance on that day.  If you know that you will be absent on a test day, please make make-up exam arrangements before the test date.  Review will take place during the class prior to a test.  Therefore, students who are absent the class session prior to a test are expected to review on their own and take the test as scheduled.  Make-up tests tend to be more difficult than regular tests.  Any missed tests must be made up within a week of the original test.  All students will take the final exam (no exceptions) (don’t ask).

Quizzes – 10% of grade:  There are one or two quizzes in each chapter.  Sometimes they are announced in advance, and usually they are not.

Projects / Essay / Other – 5% of grade:  We will do at least 4 formal writing assignments.  More information on Projects will follow.

Journal (Notes and Warm-ups) – 10% of grade:  Students are encouraged (required) to take notes from class lectures, discussions, and assignments in their journal.  Each entry must be titled with the date of the entry.  If a student is absent for a day, simply put the date of the day absent and write “Absent” as the title.  Homework review and warm-ups can also be done here.  The journal is a valuable study guide for tests and the final exam.  Journals are collected and graded on test days and will be returned by the beginning of the following class.

Extra Help

I want you to succeed in Algebra II.  I am available to help you after school on most days.  After school tutoring is also available in the College and Career Center. (The start times and dates will be announced soon).  In prior years there have been Math teachers and other tutors available each day.  I am usually in my classroom (CE-20) for about ½ hour after school each day, or you can make an appointment to meet with me.  You can also reach me by e-mail: [email protected]  I will respond as quickly as possible to any e-mail messages.  (Since so many students have “unique” e-mail names, please write in the subject line your name and period [example:  “St. John Smythe, 3rd period”]

What should I bring to class each day?  You are expected to bring, each and every day, the following materials:
1.         Three Ring Binder (for homework)                                            5.         Journal
2.         Pencils and erasers                                                                   6.         Highlighter
3          Notebook paper (Loose leaf)                                                   7.         Pens (for corrections)
4.         Textbook

If there is a day when I know we will not need the Text, I will tell you not to bring it, otherwise it is expected to be in class with you.
