How to set up your Journal

·       Use the first two pages of your journal to create a table of contents.  You will add to this table of contents each day that you add a new section of notes.  In the table of contents, write the date, section number, main topics and page number it begins on.

·       Start each day at the top of a new page.  Use a ruler to make a 1” to 2” wide left side margin.  Clearly write the date, section number, and section title at the top of the page.  This will make your journal much easier to read and use.

·       Use the left margin for personal notes that clarify the lesson or remind you of topics to study.  This is also where you write down your homework assignment.  DO NOT USE THE MARGIN FOR DRAWING, WIRTING NOTES TO FRIENDS OR WRITING ANYTHING ELSE THAT DOES NOT RELATE TO THE CLASS.  You will lose points for anything in your journal that is unrelated to the class.

·       Use the main body of the journal to take notes as directed in class.  Clearly title each section or example.  Leave a few lines when changing from one topic to another.  This will make it easier to find the start of each topic.  Remember that neatness counts when taking notes.  If your notes are hard to read, then they cannot help you study.  You will lose points if your journal is difficult to read.

·       At the end of each day, take a moment to write brief summary notes on the section, and, as you do the homework, write any general questions you may have for the next class period.

·       As we finish each chapter, leave two pages for writing the "Ideas and Formulas" from the last page of each chapter.  These notes are you last items before we start a new topic.
