The Color Purple Projects

Project Five: Concept Poetry: Five Inspiration and Candid Poems Threaded By A Common Theme

Instructions

  • Look back over The Color Purple, paying specific attention to the themes of the book: the power of the narrative voice, the power of strong female relationships, the cyclical nature of racism and sexism, the disruption of traditional gender roles. You may do research over the Internet and in libraries to gather information for this. Choose one theme or concept around which you would like to compose five poems. Remember: all of your poems will be connected by this theme.
  • You must write a one-page introduction to explain the concept behind these poems. It must be typed, MLA style. This piece will preface your collection.
  • Though I will not set too many parameters in terms of the style and length of your poems, I ask that one poem address a character in the book. For example, you may write from the perspective of a character.
  • Poems should be at least a half a page. Remember that your poems must be highly relevant to the concept. The weaker the connection, the weaker your overall collection.
  • Print out the final copy of your poems. There is a six page limit to your collection. Feel free to add pictures, drawings, etc. Please do not e-mail it to me. Be proactive!
  • Be prepared to present. Click on rubric to make sure that you have met all of the requirements.
  • Submit to iNote
