Project Four: Four-Page Essay: A Closer Look At The Women Of The Color Purple

Instructions

  • Look through your copy of The Color Purple for all of the major women characters such as Shug Avery, Sophia, Celie, etc. Consider the diversity of female personalities and perspectives throughout this text. How does each character react to oppression and misogyny? Are any successful in their resistance? Which ones stand out to you in this regards? What messages does Alice Walker have for us in this text?
  • Design your own thesis statement around any or all of the women in The Color Purple. Create a skeletal outline of your paper. What are going to focus on? How many paragraphs will you have?
  • Compose a four-page paper. You should have a clear thesis and direct quotes. Please consult your Brief Holt Handbook for help. If you have misplaced your book, you may borrow one from J-88. Please let me know as soon as possible. Your paper must be in MLA format.
  • Proofread. Spell check each draft of your paper. You may conference with me at any point to receive further comments on your progress.
  • Print out the final copy of your essay. You should have right at four pages. It should be typed with an MLA header. You will be penalized if you are over or under this limit. Please do not e-mail it to me. Be proactive!
  • Be prepared to present. Click on rubric to make sure that you have met all of the requirements.
