The Color Purple Projects
Project One: Volunteerism: Local Organizations That Address Various Types Of Abuse
Instructions
Locate a local organization that addresses abuse or womens’ rights in some capacity. Please search thoroughly and consult others such as teachers, parents, neighbors, etc. along the way to make sure that you are not compromising your safety in volunteering. Before you volunteer, please let me know where you are going and all of the information for this organization.
Research the purpose of the organization. When did it start? What serves does it offer to the surrounding community? Is it affiliated with a national/international organization? What volunteer opportunities are available here? What are some interesting facts about this place? How does it deal with abuse or womens’ rights? Record your findings.
Set up a time to volunteer. Make sure that you let others know where you will be. Give others numbers of the organization along with names and addresses. Bring a cell phone with you. Be prompt and follow through with your commitment. If you have a sudden change of plans, please notify the organization as soon as possible.
While there, think about the environment, the people, and the interactions that you have. Afterwards, record your thoughts and observations. What is working at this place? What are some areas for improvement? Would you volunteer here again?
Compose your thoughts into a four-page paper. It must be typed, in MLA format. Consider devoting a paragraph to the history of the place, one to the purpose of the place, one to your actual volunteer experience, one to your reaction to the organization, one to how you feel Celie and/or Nettie would benefit or not from a place like this, and one to your final thoughts. You may also add to or mix up this order. Print out your final copy. Please do not e-mail it to me. Be proactive!
Be prepared to present. Click on rubric to make sure that you have met all of the requirements.
