Weekly homework packets will be sent home every Monday and will be due on Friday morning of that same week.  If there is no school on Friday, homework is due on Thursday.  Please have your child prepared to take their spelling and vocabulary tests by Thursday.  Developing responsibility and reinforcing work that we are learning at school is a major part of homework.  Please remember that homework is an ADULT/CHILD activity.

Homework will usually include:

* daily reading log
We encourage parents to read a book to/with your child everyday for at least 15 minutes a day.  Help your child record the book title on the reading log everyday after reading either a portion of a long book, or several short books.  The reading logs will be turned in after the last day of each month.  Students who read everyday that month will be rewarded with a take-home book.

* math worksheets
The math homework will review the most recent content we are learning in class.  About every 3 weeks, a Color Review Sheet will be given as homework.  This Review sheet means that the students will take a Chapter Test on similar content that week.  Please make sure you go over your child's work and explain problems to them, but also please let them try to do everything independently as well!

* vocabulary (10 words)
Students learn and practice 10 vocabulary words each week in our literacy centers.  They will bring home a paper with words and pictures filled out every Monday, and they must practice memorizing the 10 vocabulary words that week.  I will test them on Thursday or Friday and if they know 8 or more words, then I will give them a new sheet of vocabulary words the next week.  If they know less than 8 words, then the same vocabulary words will be sent home the following week.  I suggest making flashcards, and practicing them everyday.

* word work / spelling (10 words)
Each student will receive 10 individualized words per week.  During literacy centers in class, students will practice many activities to try and memorize, utilize, and understand the meaning and application of the 10 words they have.  On Thursdays and Fridays, they will be tested on the spelling of their 10 words.  Words that are misspelled on the test will be given again on the following week's list of words until they master them.  Your child will bring home his/her 10 words every Monday, and the homework is to write the 10 words in sentences and write them in alphabetical order.

* language arts worksheets
Students will have homework on the "skills of the week."  Each week in class we will be focusing on a range of skills including: phonics, grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, high-frequency words, etc.  I will send home work that matches what we have been practicing in class.

The purpose of homework at this age is to learn responsibility.  Homework will be graded "done" and "not done."  Please make sure that your child completes his or her homework packet each week and turns it in on time!

In addition to weekly homework packets:

* Students must prepare their
SHARING on the day they are assigned to.

* Sunday nights and Monday morning, please REVIEW with your child what he or she did over the weekend for our Weekend News writing
