Starting the end of September, we will begin sharing. Your child will be assigned one day of the week to share something that fits the weekly topic: MONDAY: Alina, Emily,Kinako, Melissa TUESDAY: Dennis, Fuka, Kayleigh, Seyon WEDNESDAY: Dodam, Hadas, Mai, Terrence THURSDAY: Emi, Julia, Matthew, Winny FRIDAY: Emilie, Jhanvi, Maya, Naoki (* When there is no school on your sharing day, your child must share the day before or after in the same week. I do keep track of who shares each week.) Click here for the weekly sharing list!!! On your childs sharing day, he or she will alternate between presenting a poem for the class, sharing a riddle, and regular sharing. Here are descriptions of the types of sharing we will do this year. Please make sure your child is prepared each week. Poem: The student will choose a poem (from a book, library, internet, etc.) of at least four lines. Memorize the poem (No reading please). While reciting the poem, the student will be holding a prop of some kind that fits the theme of the poem. For example, if the poem is about Autumn leaves, the student may be holding a beautifully colored leaf. Sharing Riddles: In accordance with the monthly theme, the student will choose an object and place it in a brown paper bag. The student will memorize 4 clues that describe the object inside. Each clue on its own must not give away the identity of the object. In addition, each clue should build upon the next clue to allow students to guess what the object is. For example: 1. You can make a pie with it. 2. It grows on trees. 3. It can be red, green or yellow. 4. It has a star inside Object in bag: an apple Regular Sharing: Students will bring in an object that fits the weekly theme. They will share at least 4 sentences about their object. It is very important that your child practice his or her sharing at home so that they are comfortable in front of the class. I will be assessing their sharing each week in five areas: 1) Content - Did the student practice the right topic at home without pauses? - Were there at least four complete sentences? 2) Eye Contact - Was the student looking at the class? - Did the student memorize the words? 3) Presence - Was the student standing still or moving around? - Did the student have good posture while sharing? 4) Volume - Was the student speaking nice and loud? - Was the student speaking clearly and not too fast or slow? 5) Enthusiasm - Did the student show excitement to share? - Was there expression in his or her voice? Every Friday, I will send home the sharing form that summarizes how your child did in sharing that week and what areas need additional practice. Each area will be assessed from a scale of 1 to 6. A 3 or 4 is considered average. Please review these forms to help your child with improving the next weeks sharing. Also during this time, I make sure that every student in the audience is following the classroom rules of being good listeners and participants. I will make a note on your childs sharing form if they have been disruptive during other classmates sharing. Speaking in front of a group is always challenging, no matter the age! Practicing sharing each week this year will help your child overcome fears of speaking in public. I look forward to hearing your childrens wonderful sharing topics!
