The mathematics curriculum is no longer focused solely on traditional computation skills. It is required that students be able to explain their problem-solving processes as well as their answers. A combination of math centers, free-exploration time, and practice sheets will be used in the class. Materials - MATHLAND: a hands-on manipulative based program, by Creative Publications to help children develop critical thinking skills - HOUGHTON MIFFLIN: our main state text which will be used for computation drills and practice - Children's literature stories to address counting, graphing, number sense, facts First Grade Content Areas - Addition & Subtraction Facts (up to 2-digits) - Data and Graphing - Numbers and Patterns to 100 - Money (coin identification and manipulation) - Time (hour and half-hour) and Calendar - Geometry, Fractions, Probability (3-D shapes, 1/2, 1/3, 1/4) - Measurement (centimeters and inches, kilograms and pounds, liters, cups, pints, quarts, etc.) - Problem Solving and Comprehension Second Grade Content Areas - Addition & Subtraction Facts (up to 3-digits) - Multiplication & Division - Data and Graphing - Numbers and Patterns to 1000 - Money (coin identification and manipulation) - Time (five minute increments) and Calendar - Geometry, Fractions, Probability - Measurement (centimeters and inches, kilograms and pounds, liters, cups, pints, quarts, etc.) - Problem Solving and Comprehension |
