On June 6 Tropical Storm Allison raged through South Louisiana.
We had just returned home from a long awaited vacation in Florida. Used to numerous thunderstorms in South Louisiana, we thought nothing of the torrential brought by the storm.
At about 2 P.M. my son, (he and his sister were home because it was summer vacation) called my husband at work and said that the water in the 'yard' was now at the door of our house. My husband immediately left work and was barely able to get to our house because of the flooded roads. By the time my husband and kids left the house, they were walking in water. That evening, the water rose to 3 feet in my home. Everything was lost.
To see your home totally destroyed in one night is a pain that I cannot begin to explain. We are truly grateful that we were all safe; my children proved that they are extremely capable in a crisis, and I look at my husband as a hero.
On November 17, 2001, we finally returned home. It took 6 months to get our house repaired. It has been a long hard road. There were times when I was extremely angry with God, but I do have to step back and look at the whole picture and thank God for all things, big and small.
We would not have made it, but for our family and friends. I am thankful for Mom who took care of my cat (even though she hates cats). I thank Charley, Debbie, and C.J. for taking care of my german shephard. I thank all those who kept our spirits up for 6 months. |
