FYI HEALTH SERIES    continued from page 4
What's good for your health, in this case, is also good for your environment. Studies have shown that raising animals on pasture is more eco-friendly than raising them in confinement. Growing corn and soy for animal feed using conventional methods causes significantly more topsoil erosion than keeping land as pasture for grazing. And grazing animals appear to contribute to soil fertility as their manure is deposited naturally over a large area of grassland.

No matter how you slice it, organic meats have a lot to offer. But what about all those other labels you see on meat packages? While the USDA certified organic label guarantees your meat has met very specific guidelines, most other labels offer less assurance. For instance, the government definition of a food labeled "natural" means it has no artificial colors or additives and it has been minimally processed. So while some meats labeled natural may be antibiotic- and hormone-free, there's no guarantee. Many natural meats have also been fed vegetarian diets, but the only way to be sure what natural means is to read the label closely for the company's definition. Grass-fed means the animal had access to pasture, but even conventionally raised cattle may spend some time on pasture. If the label is unclear, contact the company via their Web site or by phone to ask about feeding practices or the use of antibiotics and hormones to ensure that the meat you buy is truly a cut above the rest.
