NEPTUNES/N.E.R.D.
Do not take or use any images without my permission 4/2002 -- HMV in Times Square, New York City, NY This was the very first time my friend and I met Pharrell, Chad and Shay (aka N.E.R.D.). I had been into the Neptunes music since 1996 or so when they first did a remix for Blackstreet called "Tonight's the Night", which featured supergroup SWV at the time. Their production really got the public's attention, though, when they hooked up with Noreaga and produced the notorious song "Superthug". Ever since then, I was all about the Neptunes...and so was everybody else. When my friend told me that they were going to do a signing in NY, I was hyped! I feverishly did this drawing in about 4 hrs, right before I went to work (I work the nightshift in a hospital, by the way), and the next day with only 2 hrs sleep, my friend and I were off to NY. After waiting for a few hours, we finally entered HMV just in time to see N.E.R.D. walk in. Needless to say, the fans went WILD!!! My friend and I kept our composure, but I was just a nervous wreck because I was hoping that N.E.R.D. would like my portrait. When I arrived at their table where they were seated, I was face to face with Chad. I was awestruck because being a Filipino who is currently trying to make it in the music biz, I see Chad as a role model and as an example of a Filipino who has successfully made it as a music songwriter/producer in the music industry. I had so much I wanted to say to him, but of course, the nervous wreck I was, I forgot what I was going to say. Damn it. Instead, I took my drawing, placed it in front of him and shyly asked "Can you sign my portrait?" (insert achingly sweet smile here) Instead of the usual handshake, smile, and signature that he gave everybody else, Chad totally shocked me when he suddenly yelled out "Holy sh**! That's cool as sh**!" He then proceeded to stare at the portrait while blindingly reaching for Pharrell and Shay going "Yo, you guys gotta look at this!" After Pharrell separated himself from an EXTREMELY adoring (yet clingy) fan, he took a look and said "Damn!". I was amazed. Here were the two people who created some of the best music out there right now looking at my drawing....and they actually seemed to like it! I really started to smile when Chad was telling Pharrell, "Hey look! She knows who Spymob is!" (at the time Spymob had just been introduced via N.E.R.D.'s first album) My shy self just replied "Of course I know who they are." After staring at the portrait for a bit more, Chad finally signed it and handed it to Shay and Pharrell.
Shay was cool...he said "Very nice" and signed it (unfortunately I did
not have the chance to draw him in with this portrait). Then Pharrell got
the picture, and he was so sweet! He flashed My friend and I hung around afterwards outside to catch one last glimpse of them. It's a good thing we did because N.E.R.D. came outside to pose for promo pics with a car that belonged to a local radio station. As they were re-entering HMV, (and I swear this happened), Pharrell started looking around, and when he looked in my friend and my direction, he stopped for a second and flashed us another sweet grin. Yeah, my friend and I were shocked. Meeting N.E.R.D. definitely tops my celebrity encounters experiences. Pharrell, Chad and Shay, if you guys ever read this (ah....I only wish), thank you again for a memorable experience!
