Reading Comprehension
Reader's Workshop consists of:
         
Mini-Lesson (10 - 15 minutes)
         Independent Reading (30 - 40 minutes)
          Class discussion (10 minutes)

Tell me about the mini-lesson!
       
During the mini-lesson, I explain some strategies that good readers use while they are reading.  Research shows that good readers make connections to what they are reading.  They have questions about the book before, during and after reading it.  Good readers also make pictures in their heads of the concepts they are reading about.  They also draw conclusions, or infer. 
         (I learned these strategies from the writings of Ellin Oliver Keene and Susan Zimmerman.  They wrote about these strategies, quite nicely, in their book:
