TITLE: Reading To Save The Rainforest

 

GRADE: First

 

LENGTH: 30 minutes

 

CONCEPT: The rainforest is a habitat in danger.

 

RATIONALE: This lesson gives students the reasons and ways n which the rainforests are being destroyed and the consequences of such an act. This is an informative lesson that will show the students that they already know how to protect and help save the rainforest.

 

STUDENT OBJECTIVES:

 

MATERIALS: Save The Rain Forest booklet

 : Friend of the Earth certificate

 

LESSON BODY:

ANTICIPATORY SET:

  1. Ask the students to recognize and read the words "rain" and "forest" on the cover of the reading booklet.
  2. Indicate that they should recognize those words by now.
  3. Ask in what ways they would be able to identify those words.
  4.  

    PROCEDURES:

  5. Read the Save The Rain Forest booklet to the group. Ask the students to pay careful attention to the words and pictures as it is read to them for they will read it back to the teacher.
  6. Following the teacher's reading, as the students to look through the booklet themselves, first, looking to connect the words they heard with the pictures they saw.
  7. Have each student read a page in the booklet alone, or with another student if there are more students than pages. Remind the students to use their reading strategies to figure out words they might not recognize or have never seen.

    CLOSURE:

  9. Ask the students to think about ways they can, personally, help to save the rainforests.
  10. Have the students share these with one another.
  11. Ask the students to explain the way the booklet suggested for students like themselves to help save the rainforest.
  12. Upon recognition of the last page of the booklet about learning about the rainforests as the key to saving the rainforests, pass out the certificates to the students.
  13. Read the certificate to the student, noting the line on it.
  14. Have them write their names on the lines and take them back to their seats to be decorated for display.
