TITLE: Reading About The Rainforest's Layers
GRADE: First
LENGTH: 30 minutes
CONCEPT: The layers of the rainforest help to explain where certain animals and plants live and why.
RATIONALE: The students know that there are plants and animals in the rainforest. The reading lesson gives them a better idea as to where those things are located in the rainforest and that there are vertical layers to the rainforest.
STUDENT OBJECTIVES:
- In pairs, the students in the reading group will read the pages of Life In A Tropical Rain Forest to the whole group, following the teacher's recap of the four different layers.
- The students in the reading group will glue the appropriate rain forest plant life picture on the appropriate layer page following the reading of each layer page.
- The students in the reading group will explain what each layer is to one another after the book is finished being read and the layers glued onto it.
MATERIALS: white board and marker
: Life In A Tropical Rain Forest booklet
: rainforest layer plant life ditto
: scissors
: glue
LESSON BODY:
ANTICIPATORY SET:
- Review the layers of the rainforest with the students. Remind them that they heard things about them in the story read earlier.
- Ask the students to volunteer the layer names.
- Write the layer names on the white board.
PROCEDURES:
- Read the Life In A Tropical Rain Forest booklet with the group. Ask the students to read the pages in pairs aloud.
- After each layer page has been read, ask the students to locate the rainforest layer plant that goes along with the page read and then cut and glue it in the appropriate spot on the page. Remind the students to look for the layer's name to help them find the plant that coordinated with the layer.
CLOSURE:
- Have the students read the book to the partner they read with using the pictures to help them through the difficult words.
