TITLE: Introduction to The Rainforest

 

GRADE: First

 

LENGTH: 90 minutes (30, 60 minutes)

 

CONCEPT: The rainforest is a habitat where living things grow and reside.

 

RATIONALE: The students have heard of jungles before. Rainforests are jungles and this lesson provides them with a better understanding of those things inside the rainforest.

 

STUDENT OBJECTIVES:

 

MATERIALS: First New Discovery Book called The Rain Forest

 : chart paper and marker

 : Rain Forest Animals activity packet

 

LESSON BODY:

    ANTICIPATORY SET:

  1. Ask the students what a jungle is.
  2. Explain that another name for a jungle is "rain forest".
  3. Ask the students if they have seen "rainforest" or "rain forest" before.
  4. Indicate that there are books in the class library about the rainforest for them to read or use as resources.
  5.  

    PROCEDURES:

  6. Read The Rain Forest to the class. Ask the students to pay careful attention to the pictures and colors they see.
  7. Following the reading, ask the students to make a brainstorming list of ideas about the rainforest. Write down these ideas on the chart paper to display later.
  8.  

    FOLLOW-UP ACTIVITY:

  9. Explain that morning work will be a fun application of the things they learned about in the book and thought about it the brainstorming activity.
  10. Show the students the Rain Forest Animals activity packet. Read through the direction of each page and explain what needs to be done for each.
  11. Instruct the students that they should color the pictures on each page since they know what colors some of the things should be from seeing them in the book.
  12. Send the students to do their work at their seats.
  13.  

    CLOSURE:

  14. Bring the students attention back to the chart paper where the brainstorming list is written. Ask the student to share with one another one thing written on the chart paper and explain what it means.
