Shapes

Shape People
I cut out different shapes for the kids.  Then I tell them to glue the yellow circle on top of their paper.  Then I have them glue the blue square for the body and the blue rectangles for the arms.  Then they glue the brown rectangles for the legs.  Then the black ovals for the shoes.  Then I wanted to add triangles, so they glued the two triangles for the hands.  Then they drew a face.  Some added hair and clothes.  They all looked different and they were all so cute!

Shape Houses
I wanted each house to look different.  So I put a lot of squares of different colors on their tables, a lot of triangles, a lot of small rectangles, and a lot of small squares, all of different colors.  And I put yellow circles out for the sun.  Then I told them to find a large square and glue it onto their paper.  Then I told them to glue a triangle for the roof, and a small rectangle for the door, and two small squares for the windows.  Then I had them put the sun above the house.  These came out very cute.

Shape Trains
Prepare circles, rectangles, squares, and triangles to make trains.

Shape crowns
Have them glue shapes  on a strip of paper.

Shape necklace
Punch holes on the top of each shape and string each shape through a piece of yarn.
Humpty Dumpty-  I do several things with Humpty Dumpty.  First I make one Humpty Dumpty for each kid and I hang them on the wall.  If the kid misbehaves that day, their Humpty goes upside down and they lose 5 minutes of recess.  If they misbehave again that day, their Humpty goes off the wall.  Then they lose their whole recess and they do not get a reward on Friday.  Each day their Humpty goes right side up and they start over.

Shapes-The first week of school, I talk about shapes.  I read the story
Lumpty Dumpty to them and then we make a Humpty Dumpty to hang from the wall.  I give them a large yellow rectangle.  I tell them to draw an oval or to round the corners off of the rectangle.  Then I give them 4 black strips for the arms and legs, they accordian fold thes strips and glue them on.  Then they add a face and clothes to them with crayons.  These are very cute hanging from my ceiling.  Some are small and some are large.
Rainbow fish-  I read the story The Rainbow Fish on the first day of school.  Then I have each child count out 12 beads that change color in the sun light.  They then put it on a pipe cleaner and I twist the two ends of the pipe cleaner together around their wrist to make a bracelet.  We then go outside to watch it change colors.  Then we come inside and color a fish that I made out of paper plates.  They use smelly markers to color their rainbow fish.
Hallway Chant
I'm giving myself a great big hug
I'm standing straight and tall
I'm looking right ahead of me
I'm ready for the hall
(I don't know who wrote this poem, but when I find out, I will give credit to that person)
