Hopper Family Genealogy

BROTHERS HISTORY 2

John D. was born in Mississippi. He enlisted in the Confederate Army on May 14, 1862 in Holly Springs, MS , as a soldier in the 10th Regiment MS Volunteers in Company K. John D. a private, had grey eyes, light hair, fair complexion, and was 5'11" tall. By occupation he was a farmer. He signed up for three years, but he only served three months because he died of disease on August 15, 1862, at Camp Gladen Hospital near Chattanooga, TN. When he died he had never been paid, so his wife recieved the balance of $37.00 that was due to him. His record does not state any battles he was in. He is buried in Chattanooga, TN.

This is just a little about the activites of these three brothers, we are certain there are many other thing that are to be told, if we only knew them now! The Hopper homeplace, being located where it was on the Hatchie River, was sure to be visited very much by both Union and Confederate Soldiers. There were four battles fought within 30 to 40 miles of their home, with the major one, The Battle of Shiloh, fought only 50 miles away. So, as you can see they probably never knew which soldiers, North or South, would come up the road next, only hoping it would be one of the brothers coming home to stay.

I, although, do have copies, for myself, made directly from the originals. Mickey was gracious enough to share them with me.
