Rioting in East Timor has left at least two people dead, prompting an increase in police powers and a curfew. The protests started peacefully, following the arrest of a student.

It is the worst violence in East Timor since it became the word's newest country in May.

As the protest grew, students went on the rampage, setting fire to vehicles and buildings.
