In pictures: East Timor riots
Rioting in East Timor has left at least two people dead, prompting
an increase in police powers and a curfew. The protests started
peacefully, following the arrest of a student.
It is the worst violence in East Timor since it became the word's newest country in May.
As the protest grew, students went on the
rampage, setting fire to vehicles and buildings.
An Australian-owned supermarket was
attacked...
...and protesters looted shops.
President Xanana Gusmao visited the scene
but had to be escorted to safety.
East Timor is one of the world's poorest
countries, with high unemployment.
Our correspondent says the protesters are
frustrated that the good life has not come to them quickly enough.
