What we have here is a copy of what may be the
very first story Simon and Kirby did together. Now, as we all know, the first
published Joe Simon and Jack Kirby story is the Blue Bolt tale (signed just
"Joe Simon") way back in Blue Bolt No. 2 (July 1940). And even so,
Kirby's work looks limited to just the first five pages.
But there exists original art to a Simon and Kirby story
called "The Daring Disc," which appears to be the first installment of a
continuing series that never made it. This art has been bouncing around for
a while, so if you are one of those dammned insiders who have already seen
it, we're assuming that most of you out there have not.
Because Simon's book The Comic Book Makers now reprints this story, Vanguard Productions asked me to limit your view to a couple of pages, which I agreed to do for Joe and Jack.
A big HOOHAH! thanks to Mike Feldman for clueing me
in on the existance of this art, BTW. He gets a free Hoohah! Vol 1 CD-ROM.
Anybody out there who also wants to contirbute to our cause, by article,
art or whatever, will also be showered with such a prize!
There's been some speculation about whether this story
is an older one which Joe cut up and repasted. Rather then get into such
things, we're just going to reprint it for you, so you can see it for yourself.
