Powerpoint Lesson: Hinky Pinkies
Holly Allen

SCOS Objectives:

3rd Grade Language Arts:

<>1.04        Increase sight vocabulary, reading vocabulary, and writing vocabulary through: word study.

This lesson also encourages students to think in a multi-step, abstract way.  They must consider what words are synonyms of the ones given, and then consider which of these words rhyme with one another and have the appropriate amount of syllables.

Key Questions:

*What is a hinky pinky?

*What steps do we take to solve these riddles?

*Can the students create their own hinky pinkies?

Materials:

PowerPoint presentation

Thinking caps

Procedures:

  1. I will bring small groups of students into the library a few at a time (4-5 students).  We will gather around one computer.  I will explain that we will be solving a few word riddles today on the computer.  I will also explain that we will need to keep our voices down, as there are other classes working quietly in the library.  I will also encourage each child to leave enough time before answering for all the students to think.

  1. I will go through the PowerPoint with the groups.  I will pause for questions whenever needed.  When we come to sections with questions, I will allow the students to brainstorm until they come up with the correct answer.  If necessary, I will provide hints.  We will work through the presentation.  (See attached PowerPoint presentation)

  1. I will ask for any final questions then instruct the children to continue thinking of other examples. I will encourage them to share their ideas with their classmates and me.

Differentiation:

The students will benefit from the novelty of a PowerPoint lesson.  I tried to select fairly easy hinky pinkies, but some students will need a lot of help from me.  I will encourage students to think in steps, and if necessary, work through each step with them.

Assessment:

I will observe the students as we work through the PowerPoint.  I will ensure that all students are equally participating, thinking, and trying.

Next Steps:

I will ask the students to continue thinking of hinky pinkies, hink pinks, and hinkety pinketies.  I will encourage them to share their ideas with me, as well as their classmates.
