Halloween started with the Celtics who celebrated the new year on the first of November. They believed that on October 31 both worlds (the living and dead) came together to make predictions about the future. During Halloween night the Celtics would build bonefires and sacrifice human skin and dead animals. The Celtics dressed up in costumes wearing animal heads. In the 800's Christianity influenced this festive fun. With this November frist was called All Saints Day to honor the saints.
During Halloween (Allholowmesse) the poor would beg for food and rich would give them cakes and other goodies. That is when Trick or Treat came about in America. And as for costumes and ghost stories, when America was flooded with immigrants, they brought with them chilling tales and today's ideas of the Halloween that we all celebrate today. |
