Richard
Wagner's epic masterpiece Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung), first performed in August 1876 in Bayreuth, is the most ambitious work in all opera. The four-opera production, created to be performed within a week, spins a complicated and involving tale of power, greed, corruption, love, and renewal inspired by Norse mythology. Since its world premiere in 1876 at the Bayreuth festival, the work has intrigued critics, scholars, and audiences with its strong characterizations, philosophical implications, and extraordinary musical achievements.
A new production of the Ring has been in the works at Seattle Opera since 1995. Performances of Das Rheingold and Die Walküre take the stage in August 2000, and the full cycle debuts in August 2001.

do so because they are afraid of it, and many more are terrified of
a 3,000-seat house despite our good acoustics. …"

Forging a Second Ring |
By Speight Jenkins |

"…We resolved that in our Ring no singer would ever sing meaningless words—in other words, if a
sword was supposed to break, it would break, or if a fire was supposed to flame, it would do so. On the other hand…"
