Play the Game
Anzu was humming silently as she was packing a
box of chocolates. She was in a good mood – Valentines were one of her
favourite days and they were just a day ahead. Suddenly, she stopped. Yami
wasn’t with them anymore, so why was she preparing chocolates for somebody?
Wasn’t the Pharaoh the person she loved?
The brown-haired girl sat down and closed her
eyes. In her imagination, she could see the other Yugi playing, talking and…
She did miss him, she still liked him – but she didn’t feel the warmth in her
heart. But she was sure that earlier she – no…
She got it wrong. Whenever she thought of
Yami, she also thought of Yugi. They were linked in her mind – as they were in
reality – they almost formed one creature. But the person she loved wasn’t
Yami… He may have been attractive, mysterious, but he was too distant and
vague. Aside from being a great player and being loyal to his friends, he was
an unknown.
She could remember exactly, when she first saw
how incalculable and dangerous the Spirit of the Millennium Puzzle was. It was
when Yugi duelled with Kaiba on the roof of Pegasus’ castle – Yami almost
killed the CEO… She could see it very clearly even today – the brown-haired
teenager standing on the façade, his rotting Blue-Eyes fused with Mammoth
Graveyard before him – only one head fine, Yami commending his Elven Swordsman
to attack, herself crying out to him not to do it – and then there was Yugi.
The gentle boy, who’d never try to kill someone – her old friend.
The girl opened her eyes and grinned. Now she knew
for whom the chocolates were.
Open your mind and let me step inside
Rest your weary head and let your heart decide
It’s so east when you know the rules
It’s so easy all you have to do
Is fall in love

Yugi was yawning. He never had enough sleep on
school days. Whoever invented going to school in the morning was truly evil –
even worse than Malik in evil mode and the Tomb Robber combined. He wanted to
go back to his bed!
Jounouchi wasn’t paying attention to the
lesson at all. He was staring out of the window, deep in thoughts. From time to
time he would sigh wistfully. You could bet that if Kaiba was here he would
call him a love-sick puppy… and then they’d start a loud exchange of insults.
But since the CEO was in the
Anzu was making her notes, trying not to cast
glances at her schoolbag with the chocolates inside. Most people would be
rather surprised, if they saw what nonsense she had been writing. When was this
lesson going to end? She should have given the box before it started. The
brown-haired girl sighed.
Honda shifted in his seat. Like everybody his
two friends, he was also nervous. His brain was completely fixed on Shizuka. He
thought about how cute she was, how much he liked her and how angry he would be
at Otogi, if the black-haired teenager got chocolates from her. It was no
wonder than that when the teacher asked him something his answer was:
“Shizuka-chan… I mean! That is! Er… I dunno,
ma’am.”
Jounouchi snapped out of his melancholic trans
and glared at the brown-haired teenager with fury. How dare he think about his
little sister?!

The lesson has ended without any further
love-struck ‘causalities’. Most girls took out small nicely wrapped boxes and
headed to give them to their crushes. Anzu was no exception. The three boys
blinked, wondering who was going to receive it.
“Happy Valentines Day Yugi!” the blue-eyed
girl said with a grin. The small boy blushed, looking shyly at the neat package
which was being given to him.
“It’s for me?”
Anzu nodded.
“Er… Thank you.”
“Would like to go out somewhere today?” Yugi
looked at his shoes, on hearing that.
“Yeah!” The small teen answered with a smile
and blushed again. “Burger World?”
“OK.” It was good she didn’t expect anything
elegant… The little duellist wasn’t exactly the person to propose such things.
“Go Yugi!” Jounouchi yelled.
“C’mon Anzu! Give the kid what he deserves!”
chimed up Honda. The girl turned around and whacked their heads.
“Morons.”

A date in a fast food restaurant could hardly
be called romantic – but than there was a lot of teenagers, who had gone
through that experience and even enjoyed it. Anzu and Yugi didn’t seem to mind
the place they were in – the small boy was clearly thinking about something and
the girl was starting to guess what might have been occupying him.
“Anzu? Can I ask you something?”
“Sure.”
“Well… I thought you liked mou hitori no boku
more…”
She sighed. It was obvious that topic would
come up sooner or later – and it was going to be hard to explain it all and
make it plausible, but there was no other way.
“I did like him, but not more.” she started.
“Just in a different way. He was attractive and all, but, well, I wasn’t really
in love. More like fascinated. We
all were, I guess. But the point is – if I loved him, I wouldn’t go on a date
with you.”
Yugi looked up, flushed. He wasn’t sure, if
Anzu meant what he thought she was implying.
“Oh, Yugi…” she smiled gently. She leaned over
the table and brushed her lips over his. “I love you, silly.”
