Chapter Three

***

Mokuba Kaiba was wondering what made most male teenagers act strangely around girls. There was Jounouchi who seemed to get all heroic around Mai, Otogi and Honda who quarrelled non-stop about Jounouchi’s younger sister and now his brother, who was staring at Isis Ishtar as if he saw something really marvellous?.. Yes, this would be the right word.

The black-haired boy observed the whole supper with wordless amusement. In his opinion it was quite entertaining to see how the Egyptian woman and Seto interacted. They discussed vegetarianism - Mokuba noted that the words they had spoken may have been about food, but there was some underlying meaning. Than there were Duel Monsters – something which had to come up when Seto was concerned and since Isis also played the game the two talked about the game the whole time.

The boy yawned and frowned. His brother couldn’t have missed it and that meant one thing.

 “Mokuba, go to bed.”

He was going to miss the rest of the conversation and just at the point when it started to seem it was going to be interesting.

 “But Seto!” he protested.

“No buts, you’re yawning. Bed. Now.”

 “But Seto!”

“Do I have to carry you?”

“OK! OK! I’m going!” Going to bed was a field where Seto usually won – he had the advantage of strength. And nobody Mokuba’s age would like to be carried of to bed like a baby, especially in front of an outsider.

Isis Ishtar observed Seto as his little brother went to his bedroom. She did like Mokuba  - even if she knew little about the boy. But he was an adorable creature… and it made you wonder about his brother. How could they be so different?

“You were there…” he said and she gave him a surprised look – was he going to talk about the past he refused to believe in so long? “In the court. You were there too. The Dark Magician and the Dark Magician Girl…”

 “Yes.” she nodded.

 “You remember it whole?”

 “Yes.”

The youth regarded her with an unreadable expression. His eyes were locked with hers. So blue, so cold… But where they really cold? Wasn’t there something hidden behind the ice? The longer she looked at him the more convinced she was that the ice was only a layer and underneath there was something else. But what? Was it a monster ready to devour her any moment? That she wouldn’t believe.

As she gazed into his eyes she grew more and more convinced that what was hidden under the ice was why Mokuba loved his brother – that it was whatever was best in Seto Kaiba. And as she kept her eyes locked with his she saw that what she thought was unreadable in his expression wasn’t like that at all – there was confusion, interest, there was maybe fear – but of that she wasn’t sure and foremost something warm – attraction or maybe a feeling of alikeness?

And then he stood up and walked over to her. She sat there her eyes never leaving his. There was a feeling of familiarity, déjà vu in her mind. Something like this has happened again, didn’t it? Not in this life, but in the former.

He bowed his face inches apart from hers.

“And this?” he whispered. “Does this seem familiar?”

 “Yes.”

And then, he jerked back. For a moment he stood completely still, an expression of shock on his face.    Then he turned around and walked away without a word. Isis sat in her seat and smiled faintly. This really was similar to what once happened.

Seto Kaiba was leaning against his closed door, still shocked. If it were only thoughts and pictures he would remember, than he would be fine. But he also remembered feelings.

Like he needed that! Why did he have to remember the things that didn’t matter anymore? The pale girl, whose soul was his Blue-Eyes (which made him wonder if it shouldn’t be a dragoness), the Pharaoh, Isis past self… They seemed as real as the people, who lived now – but what was the purpose? The Pharaoh must have had one, didn’t he?

There were moments when he would think like Priest Seto – he would think of the rules, the philosophy Akunadin had thought him as the one he should fallow, even if his experience told him differently.  Or he would wonder about the Pharaoh – not Yugi anymore.

He hated being confused and he was now. So damn confused…
