For All Who Gave Their Lives
Chapter 6: Hand of Doom
Hands of doom are reaching out to crush all infidels who stray
Time to know the pain but no time run within
And these hands you see before you will end the light of day
You’re ashes will be cast into the wind
(Manowar ‘Hand of Doom’)
Yuri sighed and started mentally counting to ten. That guard was so insanely annoying! They had decided, that the best way to find the lich Balkov would be looking for information concerning the Hiwatari family in chronicles. Boris had to check where one could find the said chronicles. He came back quite quickly, reporting that a copy was to be found in the Royal Bibliotheque of Schwarzhaffen. However, there was one little problem – one had to get inside. So far, it seemed, that getting there in an honest way was impossible: the guards were almost fanatics, when it came to not letting people inside.
- Look, it’s really important! – the half-elf tried again.
-
Befehl
ist Befehl! – replied the guard firmly. – When der Boss says ‘Don’t let die
Fremden in.’ dann listen ich.
They didn’t notice an old man coming out from the building. The man looked rather strange – he had a long, horse-like face; a hump and squint. He stood a while, listening and thinking.
-
Lass sie rein. – he finally
said.
-
Aber
Herr Magier!.. – the guard gasped.
-
Ich
sagte, lass sie rein! Bist du taub du Arschficker?!
- You kann come in. – gruffly muttered the guard.
The four men looked at each other, surprise written all over their faces.
- Who?.. – Yuri started, but the horse-faced man broke in.
- Not important, my child. – he smiled.
- Er… Yeah… Whatever… - the half-elf stuttered.
The four men sat around the table. Yuri was leafing through a large book.
- There. – he smirked triumphantly. – The Hiwatari family.
- Can you read it aloud? – suddenly asked Boris.
- Why? – the redhead gave the thief a confused look.
-
‘
The half-elf shook his head, wondering how he managed to forget that so many humans couldn’t read. He took the book in his hands and started the tale about the Hiwatari family.
The noble house’s Hiwatari origins lie in the
far, mysterious
In year 1390 S.I.H. one of the younger sons
was found practicing necromancy – he was removed from the house immediately,
but he swore that he would get his revenge.(…)
- That’d be Balkov. - Yuri said to no one in particular. – He probably changed his name…
-
Hey, half-breed! – Boris
snorted. – Stop daydreaming; we need to know who rules this place now.
-
Half-breed? – hissed the
red-haired warrior. – You better watch out you won’t end up as a half-head!
-
Calm down. – Takao soothed.
-
Yea, we be needin’ to know, who
be rulin’ the land o’ere. – chimed in Sergey.
-
Fine, fine. – muttered the
half-elf. – Kai Hiwatari and it seems that he and his neighbour – Lady Helga
von Wartburg - have something against each other.
-
‘Scuse me, but I don’t want to
get near Wartburg and its owners. – the thief crossed his arms over his chest.
– You have no idea, what people are talking about them!
-
She uses blood of innocent
virgins to bath? – the redhead sniggered.
-
That’d be the nicer stuff, I heard.
– the pale man answered unfazed.
-
We’re going to meet Kai not
her. – Yuri shrugged. – I’m not suicidal.
-
And where does he live? – Takao
piped up.
-
In… Schloss Feuerweg. –
the half-elf said. – It’s a week of way from here.
Kai sat calmly in an armchair. Nobody would have thought that he was uneasy – his face didn’t betray his feelings. And yet he was deeply troubled. The only thing that appeared wrong in his behaviour was the fact that he seemed to be trying to stare out a hole in the wall.
Gerda stood before him, seemingly as calm.
- So, - the young man started. – if I understood correctly, these üpas can get trough your mothers shield without any problems.
-
Yes.
-
And your mother can’t do
anything?
-
No.
The brown-eyed man covered his face with one hand, deeply in thought.
- And can you do anything? – he finally asked.
-
Apart from telling people how
to deal with them? – the woman bit her lip and shook her head. – No.
-
You will have to explain it
than. – Kai stood up.
-
I know.
-
Maybe we will have to hire an
assassin…
-
Maybe…
Elsa sat in her chamber, deep in thought. If she weren’t such a coward, the innocents wouldn’t suffer. There was one thing she could do – but she was afraid. Yet it was the only way to stop Helga… She had to use this possibility, before it was to late.
She fingered a knife, looking at it. She couldn’t do it! She was too weak… Far to weak. Maybe she would manage later. She had to do it soon, before it was to late.
Takao nudged Yuri.
- Hey, what does this S.I.H. mean? – he asked.
- Since Iron Hill. – the half-elf replied. – It was a great battle between Orks and Humans. The people in western countries count their years since this battle.
- But why? – inquired the blue-haired youth.
- Well, it was the most important battle in that war. – the redhead shrugged. – And that a great wonder saved the humans.
- Wonder?
- Ask a bard when we meet one. I don’t know.
