Entry for December 10, 2008 Mini Character Study (The Women of my fandoms)

Having written P/C for nearly 8 years, the shift to also write A/R was not an easy one. The first time I sat in front of my computer to start my first BSG fic, I was at a loss. I had no clue where to begin, what to say or how to handle Roslin and Adama. Over time, and several rewrites later, I became more comfortable with them. Mostly because I had to stop thinking in terms of P/C. All 4 characters in those two wonderful fandoms are special in their own way, each is unique. And here is my abbreviated take on them...

The Women...

Beverly Crusher: She is headstrong, stubborn,  a fiery woman with a wicked sense of humor. Beneath the devoted doctor and commander, lies a true romantic. She loves romance novels, theater, and dance. (Has an active social life on board the Enterprise) Past tragedies, such as the loss of her husband, have caused her to build up a wall around herself, therefore sometimes hiding the passionate person she is.  Her feelings for the captain were sometimes very obvious, though she never acted on them on the show. I recall a few instances where we saw a hint of jealousy whenever Jean-Luc got involved with other women.

A devoted mother, Beverly has succeeded at juggling both career and single parenthood. Aside from Wesley, she seems to have lost her relatives (parents, grandmother, etc)

Laura Roslin: The school teacher, turned Secretary of Education, turned President of the Twelve Colonies is another headstrong person. Her manner is more reserved than Beverly's however, and unlike the TNG character can be ruthless when she deems it necessary for the survival of humanity. The mantle of President is a lonely one and she has very few friends. By season 4, the only true friend she has left is William Adama. We know little of Laura's life prior to the holocaust, except that she worked closely with President Adar and had an affair with him. (He was married). Laura never married or had children of her own, though her love for them is clear when we see her interacting with children on the show. The end of the worlds aside, her life had been filled with tragedy as well in the form of a car crash that took the lives of her father and her sisters. Later, she watched her mother die of breast cancer, a disease that would afflict her as well.

During the course of the show, we have been shown brief glimpses of the woman behind the president. In every instance, she was in Bill's company. We know she has a tendency to giggle when she gets nervous and that she loves mystery novels, something Adama enjoys as well. (He sometimes reads to her, usually during her cancer treatments *sighs, wipes tears*).

Laura's role as the 'dying leader' as told in the prophecies has caused her to  close herself off emotionally. Especially in the first half of season 4, her sole purpose was to find Earth before the cancer finished its job.

It took still unexplained visions of her death for her to realize how much she was loved. This caused her to finally tell Bill she loved him. *squee*

So that's it for now. Next time, it'll be the men's turn.
