Virus Hoaxes, Chain Letters and other Internet Scams
My Ranting Overview:

Virus Warnings....What a waste of time. You can not get a virus from surfing the net or opening a text email. You must actually download a file and then execute the program. If people are that concerned about virus' then why dont they scan all their programs before opening them? And while we are on the subject of junk email....

Chain Letters. Yuk. Dont bother sending them to me. They go straight to the trash. Does anyone really believe that crap?
Then there is the three million emails I have received about a dying boy/girl and how if you send the message on it raises money  blah blah blah. HOW? If someone can answer that for me and prove it I would be more than happy to hear your comments. There is a poem I received on my nice page that was connected with a dying girl. I have linked the email message to the page also. I did forward the message as I love the poem and wanted to give whomever the creater is some kind of credit. But jeez...what a scam that is.
ICQ chains are the same...crap. Hate them, ignore them.

And of course we cant forget "send this to ten people and a......running cat/taco bell dog/south park lost episode......(you get the drift).....will run across your screen". Ok, we've all been done by these scams before, so why do people CONTINUALLY fall for them. There is one person I know in particular who has sent me at least 3 in the last 2 months. THEY DON'T AND CAN'T WORK. Again, explain to me how and prove it.

Along the same lines, are the emails that if you send this on, for every person it is sent to you will receive......free jeans from the Gap/money from microsoft/money from AOL.........

PLEASE DO NOT SEND THESE ON!

Below is something sent to me that is just fantastic and I couldn't have said it better myself :
WARNING, CAUTION, DANGER AND BEWARE!
Gullibility virus spreading over the internet!
*************************************************************
WASHINGTON D.C - The institute for the Investigation of Irregular Internet Phenomena announced today that many Internet users are becoming infected by the new virus that cuases them to believe without question every groundless story, legend and dire warning that shows up in their inbox or on their browser.
The Gullibility virus, as it is called, apparantly makes people believe and forward copies of silly hoaxes related to cookie recipes, e-mail viruses, taxes, modems and get rich quick schemes.  "These  are not just reders of tabloids or people who buy lottery tickets based on fortune cookie numbers", a spokesman said. "Most are otherwise normal people, who would laugh at the same stories if told to them by a stranger at a street corner". However, once these same people become infected with the Gullibility Virus, they believe anything they read on the Internet. "My immunity to tall tales and bizzare claims is all gone" reported one weeping victim. I believe every warning message and sick child story my friends forward to me, even though most of the messages are annonymous".  Another victim, now in remission, added, "When I first heard about Good Times, I just accepted it without question. After all, there were dozens of other recipients on the mail header, so I thought the virus must be true". It was a long time, the victim said, before she could stand up at Hoaxes Annonymou meeting and state, "My name is Jane, and I've been hoaxed". Now, however, she is spreading the word. "Challenge and check whatever you read" she says. Internet users are urged to examine themselves for symptoms of the virus, whoch include the following:
**  The urge to forward multiple copies of such stories to others
**  The willingness to believe inprobable stories without thinking
**  A lack of desire to take three minutes to check to see if a story is true.
Anyone with symptoms like these is urged to seek help immediately. Experts recommend that at the first feelings of gullibility, Internet users rush to their favourite search engine and look up the item tempting them to thoughtless credence. Most hoaxes, legends, and tall tales have been widely discussed and exposed by the Internet community.
Lastly, as a public service, this is one email you should forward to all your friends - to help stamp out the Gullibility Virus, especially to those who constantly forward you hoaxes. Then you get the last laugh  :-)
There, thats enough complaining from me for one day. Here are some links with info on chain letters, icq chains  etc  etc
