| A Native American, Chakotay is one who is close to his heritage, although he did go against his fathers wishes and went to Starfleet Academy for Four years and became an officer. Captain Sulu sponsored his entry into the Academy. He was a Lieutenant Commander and an instructor at Starfleet's Advanced Tactical Training when he left Starfleet and became a member of the Maquis. | Chakotay adorns a facial tattoo, a method of remembering and expressing his Native heritage. His father received the same tattoo after an expedition deep into a jungle on Earth, where they met a group of Natives.
