Chemical-free Fly Trap

By merc inari

The Organic or Chemical free flytrap is very simple to make. It incorporates the use of recyclable large soda bottles and other disposable materials. The working device works as follows: Figure 1 below shows that the bottle have two opposite holes around the body of which will allow a tube of OD or larger (3/4 max) to be inserted and installed horizontally. The holes are 3 to 4 inches from the bottom of the bottle. Figure 2 below shows the configuration of the tube that will act as the passage or entrance of the flies, arrows indicate entrance and exit for flies. When cutting the tube, make sure that the ends are flush with the outer shell of the container. Once this is completed (photo 1), the bottle will be filled with fluid 1 1/2 below the tube of organic material that will be use to attract the flies. The organic material will depend on what kind of flies you are trying to trap (i.e fruit and water for fruit flies and ground meat or dog crap for house flies), make sure that the amount of water is enough to drown the flies when they are inside the bottle and also seal the top of the bottle with a cap or something that does not allow the smell to escape from the top. Anyone hungry?

When assembled correctly, the flies will be attracted to the smell that the solution produces (smell becomes stronger after a few days). The flies will then follow the scent through the two holes and work their way inside the bottle. Being the stupid fly that they are, they wont find their way out and eventually tire itself and drowns. The meat or fruit works for me but it can be substituted by a non-toxic chemical (fly attractant) sold at the hardware stores for a more potent or heavy application. Once the bottle is filled with this pesky flies (yum!), you can just toss it out or re-use it again if you have the guts to clean it out. Okay here it is;

Photo 1 soda bottle, ahhhh! quench your thirst!

This was made from a soda bottle obviously, as you can see the bottle is freshly made compared to the next gruesome picture, even the camera is grossed out.

Photo 2 candy bottle, Fruit-Fly flavor, comes in different colors.

Check out the flies trapped and drowned at the base of the container, yuk--kky! The container is plastic and the fly entrance is cut out from 1 PVC pipe.
