Student Desk Book Holder

By merc inari

I know many students in college or even high school knows that the desk in the classrooms are too small and becomes crowded during class. I have experience this situations many times where I have to juggle books, notes and calculators all at the same time and it can become a hassle. It got to a point where I have steal another chair and used it as a book holder, sometimes I have to used my legs or somebody's back for that matter. That is when I said, "crap!" I need something to hold my books while I take those darn notes! And why does the instructor talk faster when he knows someone is taking notes? Anyway, I have many projects that involved molding, bending and machining plastics--so this was not new to me.

Before I started with the hard material, I first drew my design on piece of paper and started to fold it in the shape I wanted it to look. Then I tried it with a piece of cardboard to make sure that the dimensions and physical configurations are where its supposed to be when I folded it. After everything was refined, I started with a 1/4" thick acrylic sheet by cutting into shape and started forming it to the form I have designed. Acrylic works pretty good with heat when it comes to forming (I used a hot air gun for my heat forming), but it is a little brittle under stress almost like glass. I also know that polycarbonate is stronger and flexible, but works rather poor with heat. With careful work and technique, I was able to work with polycarbonate and had good results. It is kind of hard to see since the material is clear, but take a look at the picture of my book holder below;

can you find a Harry Potter book on any of the pictures? 2 of the few that I made

This is really a must for all students! It does not even take space on my backpack. The colleges, universities and schools should at least have one of this built-in on their desks! Well, I sure hope that you heard it from me first. Don't worry I have this "ideas" protected.

almost looks inconspicuous does it?

I have dimensions and how-to's for all this, but it's too much to scan and upload to the website. Someday, I will try to draw it on CAD if I find a time.
