| SOLSTICE & THE LORD WEIRD SLOUGH FEG Live at Treffpunkt, Gppingen July 31st 2000 |
||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Gppingen is a small town down in the beautiful south of Germany inbetween Stuttgart and Ulm and homebase of Mirror of Deception. Right in the town centre of Gppingen theres a small pub which has been the stonghold of metal for the past 26 years. This tiny place is called Treff and after a visit by Swedens Rise and Shine and the Quill in late May the time had come for Solstice and The Lord Weird Slough Feg to shatter its metal forged walls. Both bands were rather shocked when they entered the pub first as they couldnt imagine where they should set up their gear but a solution was found and everything worked out. Special thanks to Matze (Sacred Steel) for lending us his double pedals that night. The space was not enough to put up a huge drumkit. About 50 metalheads came to witness this show on a Monday night and they really enjoyed it. Solstice set off with Cromlech and played a really tight and powerful set consisiting of their epic New Dark Age hymns The sleeping tyrant, Cimmerian codex, Hammer of damnation, the classic To ride with Tyr plus two new songs. The first one called Bloodfeud - yet another doomed masterpiece of epic proportions including all the trademarks you except from this outstanding band, the latter a killer instrumental piece. Hopefully the announced DomecvlteMini-CD will see the light of day in the near future. As an encore they covered Stormchild by NWOBHM legend Trespass. A killer show and especially singer Moss did an outstanding job and sounded way better then he did on the first show in Stuttgart, where he didntt feel all that well. After a short break Slough Feg entered the stage (or what youd like to call it) and rocked as hell!! They played a furious set consisting of a good mix of songs from all their three albums to date, maily focusing on their brandnew killer album Down Among The Deadmen. Their celtic epic metal anthems (somewhere inbetween early Iron Maiden and Thin Lizzy) received a really good response from the crowd even though most of the audience didnt seem to be very familiar with this Californian bunch. But as on the previous nights Mike Scalzi and his crew took the audience by storm and sold quite some cds and merchandise. It was great to see how much fun especially Mike had. After the show he told me how much he enjoyed it and that they play venues about the same size back home in San Francisco. A great night of metal to be remembered by anyone! (Jochen Fopp) |

| After a few days relaxation (not really as I had just spent and evening of metal at The Rockfabrik in Ludwigsburg DJed by Matthias from Sacred Steel) it was time again for Solstice & LWSF. A lot of luck went into me getting to this show, but 2 new friends from the area managed to get me to the gig. I arrived just in time as Solstice had just started playing. Of course it was time to be swept away for an hour by more Epic Metal. A similar set as at The Limelight, only the band seemed to have ironed out the rusty spots and were really enjoying themselves. To me it felt like I might have been in a pub in Northern England circa 1982 banging to a local NWOBHM band. Beautiful. My neck was sore after this set but it was worth it. After a small beer break, Slough Feg belted out an hour of their original epic metal. They seemed to be enjoying themselves and the crowd packed into this tiny pub did too. I know Ill never forget it. This evening was topped off by a bout of serious drinking at the bar and I definitely was very hun g over the next day. All Hail Southern Germany!! (Rob Preston) |
