Denver was born in June of 2000. My aunt's Siamese cat had kittens. Out of all the kittens, only 2 survived. One was stillborn, one went to the Rainbow Bridge shortly after birth and there were two left. I went to visit my aunt in July and saw the kittens. One was already promised to someone so naturally I fell in love with the other one and ended up taking him home. I called him Denver because he came from Colorado. Denver never took a liking to me much. This thoroughly disappointed me. He ended up attaching himself to my dad. Denver preferred dad's lap and his company. Eventually dad and I made a deal, that if he could keep Denver then I could have another cat to be my own. This worked out well and that was how I got Mirra. Mirra and Denver were buddies from the start. They liked to play together and cuddle each other.
Like most of our cats, Denver liked to eat weird things. He liked lettuce. None of our cats have ever liked lettuce. He also took a liking to spagetti. Denver was a picky cat about his water. He would have a full bowl of water but still he had to have the cold water from the faucet. Dad would get up in the morning and Denver would be waiting on the bathroom counter for him to turn on the water.
Denver went to the Rainbow Bridge on New Year's Day 2003. We had noticed around Christmas time that he was having trouble going to the bathroom. We took him to the vet and they said he had crystals in his urine. They fixed him up and sent him home and he was ok for a few days. We had this problem with cats before and they never looked as bad as Denver did a few days after the vet. We took him back to the vet and they gave us some medication to give him. I was out on New Year's eve but when i got back my parents were with him in our bathroom. They said they had been there almost all night. He still hadn't gone to the bathroom and his breathing was labored. He starting having seizures. There was nothing we could do. It was 3:00 in the morning and the nearest 24 hour emergency clinic was too far away, we never would have made it. He passed on a little while later with all of us there comforting him. I'm still not sure that the vet diagnosed him correctly. He may have had crystals in his urine but i think there was more to it than just that. I found out later from my aunt that the other cat that was born and survived had a similar problem. It had something to do with it's kidneys or liver. They had to give it an operation and now it is doing fine. I think it may have been a hereditary problem or something. Either way we all miss Denver very much and he will always live on in our hearts. |
