Playing away from home so to speak Mirmis played a solid debut set at the prestigious Half Moon venue in South London.

Mirmis fitted in the middle of the 3 band line-up, and were hot from the word go!
Although a smaller than usual following turned up, there were enough there to be heard and their delight was met when the opening riff of Ride the Wave was blasted out the speakers.  Visibly, mirmis are strikingly more energetic than usual, notably guitarist Marios Loizou – dressed to impress – and with a look of menace suggests he has had a few pints down him beforehand.  Has he been reading the book on “how to look completely fuc*ed on stage yet in control at the same time” by Lloyd Pritchard??

Speaking of the drummer his playing was as powerful as ever, even though his words afterwards would have suggested that he may have taken the easy route, but oh no not with Mr Pritchard “I couldn’t hear a f**kin thing out of my fold backs, I thought of playing it simple, I then sipped a bit of my alcoholic beverage and realised, sod this the crowd are getting it large!!”

Meanwhile Mr Clowes on vocals put in a very spirited performance, gags for the crowd aplenty, and an especially strong performance on the new song he wrote with Mr Andy Kyriakides “Not You”.  This melancholy song is one of the only ballads in the mirmis catalogue; it’s a combination of Radiohead meets Burt Bacharach, meets Spandau Ballet (in a dark alley!)  Its gentle guitar parts are layered with brilliant melodies predominantly from Clowes, It turns into an epic finale.  It has only 5 chords (One more than Queen Of King) and ironically the nearest sounding song to it.

Elsewhere another new number, again penned by Clowes followed Ride the Wave in a frantic first 10 minutes.  Gonna Make you mine (No not a Lionel Richie song) sounding a bit like HIVES ON SPEED was met with a rousing applause.  Its sort of Punk meets NWOHM, With Loizou rattling out yet another schenker-esque solo!  Kyriakides meanwhile is super cool.  After the tragedy of the last gig at their ill-fated jinxed battle of the bands, where Kyriakides’ bass string broke (a 1 in 1000 chance apparently) this man displays a sort of “Ronald Koeman/Lothar Matthaeus” solid at the back performance.  And a few thrills were on display during another Punk/Pop Number Alice in the Looking glass, where Kyriakides makes Mark King sound lame.

In between the stand-out track Do you remember when is played with ease and met with a good response, most of the audience knowing the words off the back of their hand.

The set nears an end with another new track, the Loizou/Clowes penned pop rock gem Wander Why featuring some beach boy harmony backing vocals and a big catchy chorus.

The final song is not surprisingly the pumping Sit Down Fall Down….what an ending, what a gig….the crowd wanted more but due to the time limit fans were left disappointed.  Not by South London Rock hopefuls Mirmis of course……
