When the second impact occured, NERV came up with several projects, each designed to save the human race. While the mecha weapon EVA was the primary project, genetic engineering was used and through that three more projects emerged. Angel, Devil, and Animal involve manipulation of DNA, with angel and devil having a special 'skill' called metamorphosis. God has sent his Angels. Lucifer, seeing his oppertunity, sent his demons from the underworld as well. God has his Angels for protection. The Devil has his demons for protection.
