It was 16, March 1966. A  20 year old combat medic named Alfred Rascon, assigined to the 1-503 Infantry, 173d Airborne Brigade, was moving with his recon platoon to reinforce its sister battalion already under fire. Enroute, a firefight ensued, and Specialist Fourth Class Rascon, found himself fighting a life or death battle to save his severely wounded comrades. When it was all said and done, Specialist Rascon had saved numerous lives, many times sheilding his fallen comrades with his own body, only to suffer

tremendous wounds from exploding grenades. Now Director of the Selective Service System and a Captain in the Army National Guard, Director Rascon reflected back to that day in Vietnam, "I didn't think I did anything, except my job". Director Rascon talked about that day in 1966, but he always seemed to go back to "I didn't think I did anything". In reality, he denied himself aid until the wounded were evacuated. He  brought ammunition to the only remaining machinegunner when there was no one to carry it, and he sheilded soldiers with his body not once, not twice, but three times, each time being wounded by small arms fire and scrapnel.
Director Rascon, also spoke on becoming a naturalized citizen and his road to success having been born in Mexico. Director Rascon has been honored by the CATO Institute, received recognition from the American Immigration Lawyers Association and Foundation, is considered one of the 200 most influential Hispanics in America, and is an inductee in the Army's Officer School Hall of Fame. Director Rascon received the Order of St. Maurice, Primicerius. Congratulations Director Rascon.
