Road Trip 2003
The purpose of this trip was to stay off the Interstates and see unique things about this country. Sadly, except for a few people and businesses in Chicago and the landscape in the southwest, I did not see anything unique. It was just one chain after another, and the only thing local that was open in each town was the library. All the museums I passed were closed and the local cafes and motels looked like they had been closed down for years. I did enjoy some things on this trip though: I saw some old friends, listened to some good tunes on the road, and enjoyed hiking in Canyonlands. I tried to take pictures of things that were unique- mostly they were signs (in hotel rooms, gas stations, and other various places), nature, and architecture.

Keep the lines moving at this Subway sandwich shop in Pittsburgh, PA
And don't stay too long
Nice house in Chicago, IL
Stephanie and her husband
View of Chicago from Comiskey Park
Our view of the field at the White Sox game (we sat at the bar because our seats were too high for one woman in our group
Fireworks after the game
More fireworks after the game

The new arch across I-80 in Nebraska
Cloudy sky in Nebraska
Pretty landscape in Wyoming
Off the beaten path in Wyoming (and the local gas station had nothing unique- very sad)

More CO Nat. Mon.
And one more CO Nat. Mon.
Canyonlands, UT (it felt so good to be back)
The arch formation
So vast
Josh and the canyon
Figures it gets cloudy just before sunset
But the sun peeks out enough to make these cool shadows
And then starts a lovely sunset
And it continues
And I wish I could stay out there longer
And one last bit of clear sky before the clouds return to make sure viewing stars is impossible
Heading back east
But first, one last look at western Colorado landscape
This one's even better (but notice there's always an annoying vehicle in front of me)
It's vehicles like these that kept me from enjoying the last bit of my favourite landscape
There were cemetary signs like this one all over Oklahoma
a hawk making lazy circles in the sky (I saw this one circling just before leaving Oklahoma)
No cruising in Springfield, MO
An SUV coming from Hillbilly Junction? See what this country is coming to?
The first rule is a bit extreme, no?
Western Kentucky
This is what's happening to non-chains
Notice on the room door at the Ramada in Paintsville, KY (if you can't read what it says, it's a threatening notice to not steal anything)
Lovely weather in eastern Kentucky
These always look like fun to play on
Lush West Virginia
And of course they had lovely weather in WV as well
Lane Stadium at Virginia Tech
Out of the way Ton 80 in Blacksburg, VA
And don't think the NRV didn't have their share of lovely weather (this was right after a huge hail storm)
Virginia Tech campus
Not as beautiful as the one in Utah, but hey, at least the sky cleared for some kind of sunset in the NRV
The New River (this really is a beautiful area)
Cute house in Christiansburg, VA
Church in Cumberland, MD
How many people would stick a hanger in a hotel sprinkler? Obviously one idiot did, so now we have a warning against it
Road down to Paula and Harvey's house (the rain has made it look like a jungle)
Kim at the office in Timonium, MD
Abby helping out in the kitchen
Lake at Buddy Attick Park in Greenbelt, MD
Abby at the lake
Abby on the slide
And Neil on the slide
Cute buildings in DC (too bad one of them houses a Subway sandwich shop)
I was drunk and decided I wanted a picture with me and the road sign I used to follow when getting lost trying to get out of DC
Memory Lane #1: Sudbrook Arts Centre
Memory Lane #2: Jerry's on Chesapeake Ave in Towson (what will take over now that they're closed?)
Memory Lane #3: The Towson House
