| I am very new to rabbit breeding. I have had rabbits for a few years but didnt get serious about them until last year. I had a 10-year-old Mini Rex (she died on 2/16/06 of old age) that was given to me for a pet when she was 7. A few months after that I got a Dutch that I had planned to show but I never did (we still have her as a pet). Then last year I got Lucy, a Mini Lop. I love all of my rabbits, but I have a special place in my heart for Lucy. Shes not a super mini lop type but she isnt bad either; she was my first showmanship rabbit and she is really a sweetie. I decided that I would like to breed rabbits to try to get some nice show rabbits. I know I could just buy a rabbit that was already a grand champion. But what would be the fun in that?? I have been reading the ARBA Standard of Perfection and showing my rabbits so that I can learn what traits my rabbits should have. I am learning how to pair up bucks and does to get the qualities Im looking for. For example, if my doe lacks depth, I want to breed her with a buck that is very deep, etc. After my research (and begging) my parents said I could start a breeding program and they bought some nice breeding stock for me to start with. I bred Mins Lucy to Hoppins PNut Crunch and I kept one from that litter (Mins Noelle) to continue the Lucy line. Lucy is a wonderful mother but I wont be breeding her anymore because I cant register her offspring because they are missing the 3rd generation pedigree (on Lucys side only). Any offspring that Mins Noelle produces will be able to be registered.
Most importantly Im having a great time with my rabbits and thats really what it is all about!! Thank you to Qadoshyah from Hoppin Herd of Hares and Chris DeSurra for selling me some nice rabbits to help me get started! |
