|
A. Historical Background The first people who lived in Tandoh Patong were 3 cousins named Angkayah, Imam Himpon and Hatib Buro Juaini. Tanduh Patong is a Taosug term which literally means group of bamboo. According to historical accounts, this community has a lot of bamboo. Tanduh Patong is the first barangay to be passed by in going to Maimbung from Jolo. Tanduh Patong is located at the northern part of Maimbung Municipality with a distance which is relatively about 11 kilometers from the town of Jolo. The place is blessed with vast agricultural farmlands and is a major source of water. It has a total land area of 210 hectares; it's land being a flat terrain and with sandy loam type of soil. Largely, various seasonal bearing fruit trees, coconut bushes, root crops, coffee trees, durian and others grow in the area. The land, as the entire Sulu Province, has a favorable climate characterized by usual dry and rainy seasons. Tanduh Patong Elementary School was built in 1930’s as a main learning institution in the barangay and its neighboring communities. During the height of the war between the AFP and the MNLF Combatants, thousands of residents of Tandoh Patong were displaced in a massive scale and the area became an ambush zone. Intensive military actions transformed the area into a "no man's land". In 1980 the sitio proper was cleared by the Military and the civilians came back home gradually. Again, the school was then reopened until 1991. In 1992, due to a Family Feud, the school was again closed. The situation compelled the Barangay Local Government Unit (BLGU) to build another school building at upper Tandoh Patong, 1.5 km away from the site of the old school building. As a result of GRP-MNLF Peace Agreement on September 2nd 1996, where subsequent assistance were gradually infused into the community, Barangay Tanduh Patong was declared a Peace and Development Community (PDC) by the GOP-UNMDP because this Barangay availed some assistance from the GOP-UNMDP. In year 2000 September 14, the old school building was occupied by the IDP’s coming from Upper Tandoh Patong and some nearest Barangay even from the other Municipality due to massive Military operation against the Abu Sayyap. Hence, Tandoh Patong declared as evacuation area. The IDP’s still leaving at Sitio Kulbit, Duhol Cemento and Tandoh Proper particularly in old school building up to date.
